OGG Vorbis: the new digital music format

OGG Vorbis: the new digital music format

Vorbisa Ogg development began after the creators of the MP3 (Fraunhofer) intimaran medium enterprises through letters to the use of your Mp3, which involved the payment of royalties, then they decide to Vorbis developers to create their own system of encoding and is free.

OGG Vorbis: the new digital music format

We all know the MP3 music format. MP3 music can get on the internet with a quality similar to that of the music CD, exchange with others, store it in the computer, save the music CD to the hard drive, listen to music on a small portable device with no moving parts. The future is digital music and MP3 is the present of digital sounds.

MP3 also has its drawbacks. It was developed at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany that he patented and licensed their rights to MP3 consortium formed by several companies. Until now developed their applications programmers freely, without paying licenses for the format. But in September 1998, the Fraunhofer Institute began sending warning letters to programmers should start paying for the license to use MP3. Also, companies that sell music or MP3 sound equipment must pay a certain amount for each unit sold.
This is a reason to look for new audio formats that can replace our beloved MP3. And there, of course there are, even improving it. Some of these formats are:
TwinVQ: format developed by the Japanese telephone company NTT. Still experimental, achieves compression rates 1:18 to 1:20 using vector techniques. Later has been licensed to Yamaha, with the name of SoundVQ.
AAC (Advanced Audio Coding): other sound compression format based on MPEG-2.
But undoubtedly the most promising future is in OGG Vorbis. An audio compression format MP3 and more evolved than plus unlimited distribution license, as it is based on the GNU General Public License. This license type requires that all subsequent amendments based on GPL software must also be covered under the same open source license. Ogg Vorbis specifications are free to use, even if the software is written and fee owner.
Ogg Vorbis uses mathematical principles quite different from those used by MP3. In hearing tests done so far, gets Vorbis sound quality equivalent to MP3 with a file size similar. The OGG Vorbis format specification is complete, but the encoders are still in the testing phase and is expected to improve the quality and compression ratio.

The digital sound formats that get high rates of compression than MP3, VQF or Vorbis, get that understanding, not only eliminating redundancies, but also impose some loss of quality. The trick is to study human models of hearing so that quality loss occurs where the ear of the man is unable to appreciate. So OGG Vorbis is based on acoustic models of a better quality than MP3 managing to reduce the loss of quality to a negligible minimum.

Ogg Vorbis specifications are free to use, even if the software is written and fee owner.
The compression rate or bits per second (which in English is called “bitrate”) that requires OGG Vorbis encoded sound can be set. The fewer bits per second or higher compression ratio, higher quality loss. This also occurs with other formats like MP3.

Coders current testing phase (also called beta) only compressed with variable bit rate (VBR Variable Bitrate) and can generate sound files smaller and better quality than MP3s encoded at 128Kbps.

Vorbis is theoretically capable of encoding sound any bit rate between 16 and 128 Kbps per channel, although nothing prevents bit rates as low as 8 Kbps to as high as 512 Kbps current beta encoders support the following rates: 128, 160, 192, 256 and 350kbps in both mono and stereo. Future versions will add lower bitrate.

OGG Vorbis files include a comment field where you can enter the title of the song, author’s name, track number, album, etc..
